Motorcycles are a part of the road in the United States, at least according to the traffic laws. Federal and state laws treat motorcycles as vehicles. Just like the car, van, and truck drivers, motorcycle drivers are not exempted in the so-called “safety department.” The same laws of the federal government and the state require these drivers to exercise proper safety and precautions when operating the two-wheeled vehicle.

Before using the vehicle for the road, it is important for the beginner to learn how to operate it. He must be first taught in a driving school or have someone who is an expert in driving a motorcycle teach him how to do it. He must first be exposed with the different parts of the vehicle, and later on with the basics; from balancing, accelerating, braking, etc. It would be a big plus if he already used a bicycle.

Once he has mastered the different skills of riding the motorcycle, he can take it on the road as a private transportation unit. Before doing so, he should acquire a driver’s license. In addition to that, he can purchase some of the important protective gear to use while operating his motorcycle. The most important of them all is the helmet.

With the use of the helmet, plus any protective padding on the elbows, shins, knees, and arms, he could take his motorcycle on the road. He must be very well aware of the laws and regulations, especially in his home state. In California, for example, he can swerve away from one lane to another in a “safe and prudent manner”. He must also try his best to get noticed, because a motorcycle may not be noticeable for other motorists, therefore making it vulnerable for accidents.

A greater impact against another vehicle larger than the motorcycle (e.g.

a simple sedan) could spell disaster to the driver of the two-wheeled vehicle. Having such a great impact could turn the driver’s life around. He may sustain injuries in the minor setting, but he could sustain even more devastating injuries if the impact is so great permanent disability would ensue.

Motorcycle accidents, just like any other vehicular accidents, are governed by the legal theory of negligence. When a person unreasonably used care towards another person, which later on caused harm or injury for the latter, it is considered negligence.
