History of GPS System, its Application and Future Directions

• 1957 – The Soviet Union launches Sputnik. Scientists realise that due to the Doppler Effect, the frequency of the signal was higher as the satellite approached, and lower as it continued away from them. They realised that because they knew their exact location on the globe, they could pinpoint where the satellite was along its orbit by measuring the Doppler distortion.

Among the emerging applications, GPS cell phone is a well known feature in the mobile technology and is in great demand. The cell phones that are enabled with GPS have a higher range and price, but tech savvy users do not bother shelling out few extra bucks in buying them, and the craze goes on. The applications are enhancing manifold, though in practical purposes the usage is somehow limited. Acquiring maps, receiving directions and guide to reach the destination is a significant feature of the GPS enabled phones or devices.

Over all GPS devices are very appropriate for military use to track and control forces, as they help to locate people and targets. GPS or `global positioning system` has varied uses, amongst which the GPS cell phone is the most popular. They use a tracking system to locate people and also guide them towards their destination. Of course, this is possible only after the required software and service provider has been loaded onto it. Previously, it required the use of expensive software and hardware to carry out the functions of a GPS but with the evolution in technology, cellular service providers give a complete solution. Tackling emergency situations – The attack on the Twin Towers in September/11/2001 caused research to evolve emergency calling capabilities. Gokivo GPS Navigator (.99 monthly):  One of the newer GPS iPhone apps to gain some recent popularity.  The Gokivo offers full voice guided directions and has currently more than 15 million points of interests loaded in its database, including ATM’s and restaurants.  The graphic maps were not very detailed and when asked to find alternate routes, the system was very slow.  However, this GPS iPhone app does offer access to the Yahoo Local Search for 99 cents each time.  Attractive pricing for those who don’t need a full time GPS.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a technology that is used to track down people and things. When they are used in mobile phones it provides a service that can be highly effective in the event of an emergency. Some brands of mobile phones have integrated this technology in their products. Phones like the Nokia 6110 Navigator, several models of Blackberry and the Nokia N95 all have this technology on board their phones.

Currently, GPS functionality is only available in sophisticated and highly priced mobile handsets. It has been over two decades since the GPS or the Global Positioning System has been functioning properly. GPS comprise of 27 satellites which are placed in the medium earth orbit. When a satellite is 35,000 kilometers or about 22,000 miles above the surface of the Earth, it is believed to be in medium earth orbit. The earliest experimental satellite was launched in the year 1972. It was 23 years after the launch in 1995 that this first GPS experimental satellite, bore fruit and worked as a fully functional satellite tracking system. At that time the GPS system was limited for the use of the military and the airline industry.

When GPS started functioning properly for both civilian and military needs people soon realized its implications. It was in 1996, that Bill Clinton, the President then released GPS for different uses. This resulted in including in improving civilian signals and there is much improvement in the accuracy and quality of the data. GPS system used for civilian purpose has become a commercial product and a useful service. There has been an incredible rise in the demand for GPS as a market technology since 2004 and there seems to be no stopping in the probable growth of this technology.
