When the SUV first arrived on the scene it was meant to be a sportier, updated version of the family station wagon, and people love them. They sit higher off the ground than passenger cars, and have plenty of cargo room and a large chassis. However, the very things people love about SUVs are the exact things that make them more dangerous than the average passenger car.
Why SUVs Rollover
Most SUVs have a higher center of gravity than the average sedan or passenger vehicle. This makes them prone to literally flipping over and sometimes tossing the people inside around or throwing them out of the vehicle entirely. Because the center of gravity is higher, the addition of the driver, passengers, and cargo distribute the weight in an SUV in such a way that the vehicle becomes more difficult to handle under some normal driving situations.
The Statistics
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that the chance of an SUV rolling over is at least three times greater than a car that sits lower to the ground. In fact, NHTSA has found that most SUV rollovers occur without being hit by another vehicle and account for a quarter of all traffic deaths in the United States.
SUV Rollover Injuries
In an SUV rollover, severe injuries may occur, including death. This is due in part to the roof of the SUV crushing in on the passengers when the vehicle rolls over. The roofs can be flimsy and have a lack of reinforcement to prevent serious injury in the event of a rollover accident.
After an Accident
Because of the severity of injuries possible in a SUV rollover, its important to seek out a qualified personal injury attorney if you or someone in your family has been severely injured or killed in an SUV rollover accident.
Consult with car accident attorneys if you have been injured in an SUV rollover accident and suffered brain injury, spinal cord injury, or another serious injury. Backed by an experienced attorney, you can be sure your legal rights will be protected.
